September 2025 UK Minimum Wage- What Every Age Group Earns Per Hour

From September 2025, workers across the UK are earning higher pay thanks to the new National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) increases that came into effect earlier in April.

These wage rates are designed to ensure that employees get fair pay based on their age group or apprenticeship status.

This guide explains exactly what every age group earns, how much the rates have increased compared to 2024, and what it means for your weekly and monthly paychecks.

September 2025 Minimum Wage Rates

Here are the official hourly rates that apply across the UK:

What the Rates Mean for You

1. National Living Wage (21 and over)

If you’re 21 or older, your employer must pay you at least £12.21 per hour. This is the highest band and is sometimes called the National Living Wage (NLW).

2. 18 to 20-year-olds

If you’re between 18 and 20, your legal minimum is now £10.00 per hour, which is a significant jump compared to last year.

3. Under 18

For those under 18 who are not apprentices, the minimum is £7.55 per hour.

4. Apprentices

If you’re under 19, or over 19 but still in your first apprenticeship year, you’re entitled to £7.55 per hour. Once you finish the first year and you’re over 19, you must be paid the rate for your age group.

When Do These Rates Apply?

The new rates took effect on 1 April 2025. However, the change applies from the start of your next pay period after this date. For example:

  • If your pay period runs from the 1st of the month, you’ll see the increase from April 1st.
  • If your pay period runs mid-month (like the 15th–14th), you’ll see the change starting 15 April 2025.

Also, if you turn 18 or 21 during the year, your rate increases from the first pay period after your birthday.

Example- How Much Will You Earn?

Let’s calculate approximate pay at the new minimum rates:

1. For 21+ workers (NLW £12.21/hour):

  • 35 hours/week: £427.35 (about £1,850/month)
  • 40 hours/week: £488.40 (about £2,116/month)
  • Annual salary (37.5 hrs): £23,809.50

2. For 18–20-year-olds (£10/hour):

  • 20 hours/week (part-time): £200 (about £867/month)
  • Full-time 37.5 hours: £375 (about £1,625/month)

3. For under 18 and apprentices (£7.55/hour):

  • 20 hours/week: £151 (about £655/month)
  • 37.5 hours/week: £283.13 (about £1,225/month)

Important Things to Know

  • Tips don’t count toward minimum wage. Your basic pay must meet the minimum even before tips or bonuses.
  • Accommodation offset means if your employer provides housing, they can deduct up to £10.66/day without breaching the law.
  • Pay reference period matters—your wage is checked against the minimum based on each pay cycle (weekly, monthly, etc.).

Why Wages Went Up in 2025

The Low Pay Commission recommended these increases so that the National Living Wage continues to match around two-thirds of the median UK earnings. The biggest boosts went to younger workers and apprentices, ensuring they don’t fall behind.

This means more money in the pockets of millions of UK workers, though some employers have warned about rising costs.

The UK Minimum Wage in September 2025 gives millions of workers a pay rise. With £12.21 for 21+, £10.00 for 18–20, and £7.55 for under-18s and apprentices, everyone should check their payslip carefully to make sure the correct rate applies.

These increases protect younger workers, strengthen apprenticeship pay, and continue progress toward fair wages for all. If your pay is below these legal levels, you should raise the issue with your employer—because every hour worked deserves fair pay.
